As kids we are taught to explore different interests to figure out what we enjoy, but over the years choosing just a few hobbies didn’t come easy for me. I had a great deal of curiosity and wanted to experience all that I could. It wasn’t a problem until the pressure of choosing a career and going to college became a priority. There were many subjects I wanted to pursue and making a choice was quite overwhelming. Eventually I decided to follow my passion of doing hair and attend beauty school.
I plan to attend college but I still worry about balancing my interests in the future. For a long time I felt that I was doing things all wrong because I knew a lot of people who had a clear idea of what they enjoyed and what they didn’t. I was rather envious, as if they were on a straight path and I had somehow gotten lost while experimenting with my many passions. I still feel that way from time to time, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that there are those who can thrive on a narrow road and then there’s us. We are explorers and creators who crave freedom and won’t settle for living by the book. We choose to take risks in order to see the world for all it has to offer.
The most important thing to remember being a jack of all trades is not to let yourself get discouraged. Make a place for yourself in a world that seems to think success is measured by your annual salary. Create a job you love or find one you enjoy that allows you the freedom to create and the ability to explore new ideas. Doing hair, blogging and selling my handmade creations have given me all that. I’m still not finished exploring but for now I’m enjoying all that I do. This lifestyle may not be the easiest, but it is by far the most rewarding.
